There's something rotten...

The Danish Minister of Culture was interviewed in Politiken (a Danish newspaper). She's supposed to represent Danish culture broadly, including literature, sports, tv, sculpture, archives, theater and arts in general. But:
  • She mostly reads biographies and very little literature.
  • The TV that impresses her most is the news -- never mind the Emmy Award winning tv series produced by the channel DR.
  • She's sad that she missed an Elton John concert, a Picasso exhibit, and the Olympics -- that is, traditional culture.
A Minister of Culture who doesn't read fiction or watch TV, and who aparently prefers traditional, well-known culture. The word stagnation comes to mind.

As if that wasn't bad enough, she visited the Danish State Archives, which she found impressive: "They had found the News from my birthday just for the fun of it, so I could see how it was, that is, what's hidden in the old archives."

What?!? The State Archives houses and preserves the bulk of Danish historical source material, centuries worth of handwritten documents, unique collections about the Danish West Indies, in short a substantial part of the collective Danish cultural heritage. And the woman falls head over heels for a news show that's hardly a year old?

The barbarians are not at the gate. They rule the country and pretend all is well.

Makes me glad I'm writing in English.
