Five Things We Won't Miss in Space

A very long list of ingredients on the back of an ice-cream box made me think about how life would be in space, and in particular in a self-sustaining interstellar ship. Some of the additives would simply not be available, and so I started wondering how the people "out there" will manage the transition from consumer society to basic living where things are reused and food is simple but made from natural ingredients. How's that going to affect their society and shape their view of the Earth they came from?

Well, being me, I turned these thoughts into a silly list instead. Believe it, people: Interstellar space really could be utopia--at least as far as exposure to pop culture goes. So here goes:

5 things we're probably not going to miss in interstellar space:

1)      iPhones. To quote Ghostbusters: "Who' ya' gonna call?"

2)      Talent shows. Because you either know how to use a welding torch, or you walk the airlock.

3)      Sushi. It's your water supply. And you know what fish do in water.

4)      Bonsai trees. Forget pruning those suckers and you end up with roots in some nuclear reactor.

5)      Politicians. Hey, I said "Utopia", didn't I?

All right, seriously (or not, if you're so inclined): What do you think cutting the bond to pop culture would mean for a space ship crew or a group of colonists?

Fun!

No fast-food restaurants, at first, anyway. I'm sure franchisers would figure out a way, pdq, though :)

I'm wondering how much freeze-dried coffee I could smuggle aboard.

Want to be queen of the space ship, eh? Well, they install those reserve oxygen tanks only for extreme emergencies, whereas coffee is an everyday necessity. Odds say you'll be very, very popular 99.99% of the time :-)

Love the icon, btw.

And for those expecting to do spacewalks, one thing to add to their 'Must take with me' list is anti-flatulent tablets ;)

An absolute must on ships where the hydroponics department conspire with the cooks to serve cabbage-algae stew 6 days of the week.
