What I've Learned From NaNoWriMo

I'm doing NaNoWriMo in November, and learning. I'm summing up the lesson of each day over on Twitter (@jakobdrud) but here's what I got so far:

* Focus on the story and the words will flow.
* Easy does it. You'll get there in time.
* Three short sessions can result in as many words as one long sitting.
* Congratulate yourself on your writing every day. Don't wait until you reach 50k.
* Sometimes, words only happen when you sit down, keep your bee-hind in the chair, and keep typing.

That last one was from today, so guess what I'll be doing now...

So far I'm a little behind, but that's not too surprising, since I've had two days away from the computer. Still, I'm past 10.000 words on this sucker, and I like that!

Also, I'm terribly behind on reading friend list. I'll be back to following you shortly.

Some good advice you've given yourself there. :)

Go Go indeed! The lessons aren't actually new to me, but after a day writing at full speed some of these things come back to me with a certain clarity.

I'm learning things this NaNoWriMo, too. Mainly, so far, that if I actually plant my butt in the chair I can hit 2,000 words in one hour. For some reason, I'd forgotten - or never knew - this. That's quite a lot of story and just one hour. Why, I could be a writer! Maybe i should try that sometime!

But it has shown me that I do NOT have to assume I'm going to lose sleep doing NaNoWriMo, I can just commit to 6 - 7 pm writing and have the rest of my life to live! AND get to bed early (we old ladies like our sleep). I don't know why this is such a revelation, but it is. LOL

2000 words in an hour is awesome :-) It's great for you that you can have both writing and life without having to sacrifice sleep or other necessities. (Btw. we 35yo fellows with kids like our sleep too ;-) )

I'm learning that I can write 2000 words in three one-hour sessions with breaks inbetween, and that's way better than what I expected when I set out on the NaNo journey this year. Two years ago was a loooong, haaaard drag that seemed to absorb the whole day. This year I'm having fun :-)

"This year I'm having fun :-)"

And that's what it's supposed to be!

Write on!
