This wouldn't be a writing blog if I weren't a writer at heart. For the past couple of weeks (since November 1st, to be exact) it hasn't been too much of a blog, and I haven't been much of a blogger or flist follower. For that you have my sincere apologies. But in order to have a writer's blog, I need to write sometimes too. And I do that now.

The reason/culprit/excuse for my internet absense, of course, is NaNoWriMo, that crucible of writerly productivity. That is going pretty well. I'm a few hundred words short of the 30.000 mark, and with a little luck (and productivity) I may be able to reach the coveted 50K by the end of the month. Add to that the 10K words I had before NaNo, and you're looking at two thirds of a novel draft or near enough to make no matter.

I'm also tiring a little faster than I'd have liked to. What was fun ten days ago is now more of a chore, and the days seem to blur a little. Coffee keeps me going, as does daily excersise, but my gut feeling is that this constant pressure to write more-more-more isn't good for my mental health. Usually I write a lot, but I also stop when I'm satisfied with today's work. With NaNo you can't get no satisfaction, at least not until 50K. I can take another ten days of this, on principle if nothing else, but after that I'll be going back to a routine where I don't overtax myself. I guess that's why Thank God It's Over parties are such an important part of the NaNoWriMo calendar.

Anyway, I guess what I really mean to say is I'll see you when the hurleyburley's done, when the battle's lost and won.

I know what you mean about NaNoWriMo, Jakob. I had to take a few days off from it last week, so of course I fell behind. However, I'm trying to put in 18.000 words this weekend. I don't know if I'm going to hit that mark, but I have finished the first of 6 scheduled 3,000 word sessions successfully. The NaNo stats now say if I wrote 1901 words a day, I'd finish by Nov. 30, so even if I don't get to 18,000 (all tolled for the weekend) by tomorrow night, I still feel confident I can get this sucker done.

But it is grueling. It's also very good for me because I haven't written ONE word of fiction for several years, and I want to get back to it, and this is showing me how good it feels when I do dedicate myself to it. So, hang in there! You're doing great!

Wow, 6 3K sessions would be wonderful at this point, but I simply don't write that fast. If you can do it, all the better for you :-) Me, I'm counting on pure tenacity to see me through.

Considering that you haven't written for a long time, I think it's even more impressive what you're able to do throught NaNo. For me, writing is also a matter of 'staying fit' so to speak--my pace slows down if I haven't written for some time. If you're able to make those 3K sessions, you're in great shape. Write on!

Well, nobody said they're *good* words, LOL!

And I pooped out last night. The 3,000+ session was IT, for me. I've been working on it this morning, and I've got it down to where I can finish on time if I write 1982 words a day - and I've been hitting over 2000 *when* I write. We, fortunately, have a four-day weekend coming up - Thursday is Thanksgiving Day here, and we get the following day off, too, so I am really counting on those four days to pull me out of the hole - although, as I said, I'm not too badly IN it...yet. I'll keep going if you keep going!

I've never had a buddy on NaNo - want to try that? (You probably already have lots.) I never have understood exactly what that was for, really, although I've pulled together a fantastic support team of friends and relatives *here*.

Anyway - happy writing!

I'll definitely keep going. I put in another 800 words today, which isn't much, but better than the 0 I expected today. And good for you that you have Thanksgiving -- I guess that'll be the lifesaver for many nano-writers in the States.

And writing buddies, sure thing! I can invite you through direct mail or by your user name (which I don't know) or you can invite my username jakobdrud - I'll friend you right back.

Happy writing to you too. It's wonderful to hear from others in the NaNo race--a good boost to morale.

Hi! I just checked my buddy list - went to your page and clicked on "Add as a buddy" but you're not showing up in the list yet. I was staggered to discover I *do* have buddies - from previous years. Aliette deBodard is one, and there're SIX others from Denmark - and one from Aachen! From years 2006 - 09. Your user name is the same over there, isn't it? I do have one buddy from Arhus, but it isn't your usename, at least, not the one I found your page through over there.

Shows you what a lousy "buddy" I am - I'd forgotten I had a bunch of them!

Ah, just saw your nano-mail. I added you as writing buddy :-)

You really can do this :). I wish that lovely beginning enthusiasm would hang on a little longer, though, this whole middle does feel a little like a bizarre death march.

Good luck! Hang in there, type your fingers to their nubs!

Yeah, thanks for the boost to morale :-) The one thing I do have is enthusiasm for the novel. I think it's going to be a good story, and that will keep me writing even when this NaNo madness is done.

That's my problem this year - I'm really a Pantster this year, I had zero plot idea Nov. 1 an it's all just seat of the pants making stuff up as I go along! I'm not finding that to be so much fun, actually, but at least I'm writing!

I'm a pantser all the time, and am trying to prepare for the usual mess that I'll be faced with in December. I've never done anything with my nano novels, but this one I'm determined that I will. In a lot of ways, I'm trying to think of this as a sort of strange 50,000 word outline or pre rough draft. This year, I guess we could say I'm trying to embrace my inner pantser, lol!

Well, good luck and love to you both, we'll get there!
