Words and Presents and Rare Book Deals

I spent a great weekend in Copenhagen with my brother, doing Christmas shopping and a little drinking. The first part took place, among other things, in an outlet for professional chefs and waiters. Apart from knives, pans, plates and the usual cutlery stuff, they had a lot of interesting items, including a 1-yard immersion blender and a press for 'Rullepølse', a Danish sausage made of salted and boiled, salt-pepper-onion flavored pork belly.

One of the side effects--apart from the hangover and the presents now off the shopping list--was that I left a pub with a three-volume dictionary entitled 'The Book of Words'. It's from the early 1960ies and contains a variety of stuff I'd never have thought existed if not for this book. I haven't come across 'Bombay Duck' before, and I'd have no idea that it was in fact a kind of lizard fish. Nor did I know the word 'Fellmonger', describing a dealer in skins (particular sheepskins). I don't know if this is new to any of you American guys, but I'm staring into a world of bright new words and my nerdy soul is brimming with joy.

Oh, and by the way, I owe the pub three books of my own choice. I can bring them a day or a year from now. This was purely a deal based on trust, so rare these days, and I'll do my best to honor it next time I'm in that part of the country.
