Stories and Why I Send Them Out

For the first time ever I have 18 short stories waiting in the slush piles with different publishers. Five, maybe six of them are flash fiction, and so the word count isn't necerssarily the highest ever reached by an author. Moreover, some of them are experimental to say the least -- they have qualities, but I'm not sure whether those qualities are squashed by their form...

Still, I'm purdy dang proud, not least because I've managed to slip these stories past my inner editor, who told me 'nobody's gonna like this'. My editor could be right as far as some of these stories go, but the fact remains: He is a very poor judge of what is publishable and what isn't.

Show No Fear! It feels good to stick it to that inner editor.

Meanwhile, 'The Third Transmutation' is going through revisions. I'm through the first 3 chapters, which is less than 20 percent. A snail's pace, a snail's pace... My novel leaves a slimy trail.

It sure feels that way. One of them came back overnight, but it'll be out the door in a moment.

Re: Inner editors
Once they grow up they'll understand it was all for the best ;-)

I have been at it for some years now ;-) Part of the trick is simply to keep stories in circulation and not put them in a desk drawer. I have only retired about 10 stories that didn't grab any nice feedback after 20-30 submissions.

18 short stories! Wow, that's LOADS! You have every right to be proud. I hope some of them get picked up for publication.

I'm pleased enough to brag, of course, but I've also been writing short stories for a long time now. I just keep the stories in circulation.
