The Future of Tomorrow

I'm following a series of speeches on the People's University of Aarhus about future technology. Yesterday was about robotics and artificial intelligence, and the difficulties of making robots act in the real world. (Basically you can confuse a production robot by placing the stuff it's supposed to install in a different place.)

One of the things being researched is 'Big Dog', an all-terrain robot - the video below shows different trials (and errors) from 2004 to 2010. The thing they don't tell you in this video is that the robot runs on diesel and needs refueling every 45 minutes. For soldiers on patrol I guess it's not the perfect pack animal.

The main area of research for our speaker is molecular robots - robots that can be built from the same two or more components and used for different purposes depending on programming and how they're fitted together. This is something that could make robotics cheaper; uploading specific functions with an app should be possible at some point, plus mass producing the components will reduce costs.

It's a pretty impressive piece of machinery. I don't know if it scares me... but then again, I saw it yesterday in a video where it looked like two men walking bent over, face to face. The comedy was strong in that one :-)
