Deadlines and Updates

Nothing deep to say here, please move on...

But if you're still reading, let me say that sometimes deadlines are Good. This week I had a story to send off to the Writers of the Future Contest and a surprisingly interesting copy assignment to finish. Both had to be sent off on the same day, following a week where my wife was out of town--without the kids.

I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't had those deadlines, I'd have been tempted to push one job in front of me and spend much more time on rewrites than was actually necessary. As it happened, I sent off a story I liked after an intensive but quick rewrite, and I doubt I could have done a much better job if I had fiddled with it for another two weeks. A lesson (re-)learned.

Also, if there's been a bit quiet on the blog lately, that's the reason.

Thanks! As I said, I like the story, but it's always exciting to see what the editors have to say about it :-)

One of the reasons I recommend WOTF for new writers is that the quarterly deadlines really do give you something to work towards, especially if you keep them. More than once I was tempted to let one pass, and then realized I hadn't missed a deadline since 30 June 2002. Recently a friend of mine chose to miss the Q4 deadline on Wednesday. Hey, it happens. But I'm glad I was heading to the post office at 4:39pm... (grin)

I don't always have a brand new story every quarter -- as long as it didn't earn a Semi-Finalist or Finalist, you can revise and re-enter a story -- but so far four of my WOTF entries have been published somewhere. Definitely helped build up my Invenstory.

I try to enter every quarter as well. I find the idea of having a contest for aspiring writers very much in the spirit of the science fiction community -- a way to help others along.

I wasn't aware that you could revise and reenter a story, but I prefer to prepare a new one for each quarter. The more stories making the rounds the better the chances of selling one.

Why you lazy... Oh, wait, you're doing way better than me. I've been in the middle of a rewrite for over a week now. :) Good luck with the subs!

Heh, I'm not the fastest writer in the shed (or however that goes...), but I'm on a good streak at the moment. I have a few more stories that need a final polish, so I hope to send them off in October. But we'll see :-)
